Client: Paul Dedewo

Project: Graphic Design

Type: Special Projects - Athletic Branding

Year: 2021

— Paul Dedewo is a professional 400m Team USA Track & Field sprinter from Bronx, NY. He is a world champion medalist, photographer, and creative.

While training in Phoenix, Paul has expressed plenty of his creative talents. My goal here was to incorporate his track career and fuse it with his creative side. Branding, design, and product development were the key points four our project.

Work: It all started with a business card design. How can we fuse track & field with his creative works? First and foremost like every project I started off by understanding his roots and history of track & field. Then I learned his creative style and started the design process. The question for myself was, how can I make a track look aesthetic and modern…After numerous variations with the design of the track, I was able to create a subtle design that represented his initials, “P and D”. Keeping it light and modern to match the typeface I chose on the cards.

A large part of Paul is religion, I wanted to incorporate that as well by leaving a subtle hint of the cross on the informational side that divides his name and his talents.

Design in-depth: Dissected from the business card design, you can see a better view of the two tracks coming together to represent his initials. As a bonus, my intent was to also share his two careers; track and the creative side to flow in harmony from the front of the card to the back.

LATE

BLOOMER

The Last Shall Be First

I started athletics at 17, an age deemed by many to be “too late” to make an impact in the sport. I didn’t break 50 seconds in the 400-meter dash until I was 19. Didn’t break 47 seconds until I was 24. Didn’t become world-class and break 45 seconds until this year (27 years of age). All my life I’ve been playing catch up, but now I’ve finally caught up.

To all the old-heads, late-bloomers and late-starters, what if you were never late? What if you’re right on time?

Sometimes the tortoise wins at the end.

Work: For his personal brand - Late Bloomer, I designed the “LB” monogram and his first Late Bloomer apparel item. In creating the monogram I gave it a grown-up approach by taking style cues from New York and his personal style. Classy, gentlemen, and clean.
